PLAYER NAME: Miru. CONTACT: ACTIVE TIMES/PACE: EST, mostly evenings! BRACKETS/PROSE: Default to brackets but no preference. Will match formats! OFFENSIVE SUBJECTS & TRIGGERS: None! IN CHARACTER PHYSICAL AFFECTION: Sure! He's actually pretty unused to open affection in general, and will likely respond a little awkwardly, but he won't react badly. If things do cross a line, he'll begin polite evasive maneuvers. PHYSICAL VIOLENCE: Yes!!! He's a 'knight,' after all. He's an absolute powerhouse when it comes to magic, but is pretty inexperienced when it comes to direct fisticuffs, and isn't physically very strong, either. Also, he has access to healing magic, so most injuries are A-OK. Please punch him right in his stupid masked face. RELATIONSHIPS: Nobody deserves this hot mess. Also, plot baggage aside, he's suggested to be exceedingly shy and awkward about romantic matters, so actual progress might be difficult. (But please bully him mercilessly.) PSYCHIC & PSIONIC INFORMATION: No guards here, please let me know if you're interested in any mind-reading shenanigans and I can provide details! He kinda has a lot going on. Characters who are very sensitive to spiritual matters may be able to tell there's a whole-ass second soul in his body. This other soul is non-human and quite powerful, but seems to have been rendered completely dormant. MAGICAL INFORMATION: Vangeance is a stupid-powerful mage. People who are sensitive to magic power levels might be able to tell that he has ridiculously high mana reserves; it becomes especially evident when he's actually using his magic. There's also his grimoire -- he carries around a book that contains his spells, which is linked to his soul; he usually keeps it in a pouch strapped to his belt, but it floats near him he's using complex magic. His World Tree Magic allows him to create and control giant trees, and magic-sensitive folks might be able to tell his trees feel a little ... unusual. Also, people who are highly sensitive to curses and such might sense some weird curse energy lingering on him. Just a teeny bit. :) MEDICAL INFORMATION: In good health! Nothing notable here. OFFENSIVE SUBJECTS & TRIGGERS: His Sad Anime Boy backstory involves child abuse, and he knows a fair bit about the genocide of elves back in his homeland. He won't touch on either subject very easily, but please drop me a note right here if you'd like me to take extra care in avoiding either or both! OUT OF CHARACTER BACKTAGGING: Always! THREADHOPPING: As long as all parties involved have OKed it! FOURTHWALLING: Maybe! Please let me know what you're thinking of and we can hash it out! QUICK STATS: AGE: 26 HEIGHT: 5'7"/172cm BIRTHDAY: December 24th PHYSICAL ABILITIES: ★★★☆☆ MAGIC CAPACITY: ★★★★★ MAGIC CONTROL: ★★★★★ MAGIC SENSITIVITY: ★★★★☆ QUICK WIT: ★★★★☆ FIRST IMPRESSIONS VISUAL: His most notable feature is probably his tacky mask; the rest of his attire makes him seem put-together (y'know, for a fantasy-type guy) but a little closed-off. He stands at firmly average height with a pretty lean and modest build. Good posture, with the dignity appropriate for a celebrated Magic Knight. His default expression is a calm half-smile. AURAL: Vangeance has a very calm, level tone of voice with an even cadence. He usually speaks clearly and politely, and rarely raises his voice. (VA: Ono Daisuke, so he has a nice voice. Easy to listen to.) OLFACTORY: Clean, with a hint of something forest-y. DEMEANOUR: Soft-spoken and polite, despite what the leering mask suggests. He's always composed and considerate, and is consistently described as 'elegant'. Definitely a little reserved, but amicable enough; he doesn't mind banter, and his sense of humor is sparse, but dry and gently teasing.
the time is at hand now the great tree will bloom SUMMARYWilliam Vangeance hails from a world where magic is the norm, and it's highly unusual for any individual to be unable to wield magic. In this world, the Clover Kingdom is a large country in a mountainous region, flanked on either side by countries that it's at war with -- so it falls upon the Order of Magic Knights to protect the Kingdom from hostile forces. Vangeance is the Captain to the illustrious Golden Dawn, one of nine brigades of Magic Knights and widely regarded as the strongest brigade in the Kingdom. A highly respected Knight himself, he’s considered the one most likely to be selected as the next Wizard King -- the man who leads the Magic Knights, deemed the most powerful mage in the Kingdom. However, Vangeance isn't boastful or arrogant about his accomplishments. A courteous and diligent man, he's largely devoted to his job, dedicating himself to the current Wizard King and quietly serving the Kingdom. Though the mask he's always wearing and his somewhat reserved nature certainly lend him an air of mystery, he's been nothing but reliable over his eleven years of service. (Vangeance is mostly taken from the manga for Black Clover with additional information taken from the light novels, which have been translated here. CW for sections below: child abuse, allusions to genocide. Also, spoilers for everything. I largely assume that spoilers won't be an issue since I know all of, like, two people who care about this series, but in case you'd like me to avoid mentioning any spoilers, please just drop me a note here and I'll oblige ASAP!) HISTORYWilliam Vangeance hasn't had a particularly easy life. Born the bastard son to a man of nobility, he spent the first few years of his life living in the Forsaken Realm -- the poorest, most fringe region of the Clover Kingdom. That alone would have been bearable, but Vangeance was also born bearing a curse: an enormous scar that spans the upper half of his face, deep and glaring and unfixable even with magic. It was the result of a curse that had been placed upon his mother's family, and he had unfortunately inherited it. From a very young age, Vangeance was called a cursed child, and was shunned for being unsightly and discomforting to look at. His early years were quiet and lonely, but Vangeance managed to find one source of solace. For as long as he could remember, he had been able to sense a second presence within him -- another person's soul lying asleep in his body. Whoever they were, they were very sad, very angry and very wounded, and though he knew nothing of this other person, Vangeance decided that he would protect this other person within him. Having that singular goal in mind helped him endure when his life took a turn for the worse. When Vangeance was eight, his father sent for him. As it turned out, his father's legitimate son had passed away, and now lacking an heir, his father wanted to retrieve him. Members of nobility rarely treated the peasants of the Forsaken Realm kindly, and it would have been rare for any aristocrat to take in someone from the Forsaken Realm. But Vangeance was fortunately blessed with high magical potential, and his World Tree Magic was looked upon as a rare curiosity. Going from a child of the Forsaken Realm to a member of the upper class should have been an improvement to his life. However, even there, he was looked upon with contempt and disgust because of his cursed face. He was treated especially cruelly by his father's wife, the mother of the former heir and now his foster mother, who abused him severely; he later candidly calls his childhood days "hellish." It was only thanks to that second person within him that Vangeance was able to weather those difficult, lonely years. The knowledge that his body was not just his own, and that he needed to protect this weak and vulnerable other person gave him the strength to quietly endure. It helped that, when he was nine, he began having vivid dreams of a life that wasn't his -- dreams of long-dead elves who had lived a happy, peaceful life, only to be betrayed and massacred by treacherous humans. No doubt the soul within him had suffered that terrible fate, and Vangeance was all the more certain that it was his duty to protect this terribly wounded person. When Vangeance was 13, fortune finally smiled upon in the form of a chance meeting with Julius Novachrono, the man who would later become the Wizard King. At the time, Julius was merely a magic knight who took to wandering the Kingdom in his spare time, seeking out new and interesting types of magic. And when he happened to come across Vangeance using his World Tree Magic, Julius was instantly impressed. He praised Vangeance for his magic and requested that he join the magic knights when he was of age; when Vangeance hesitated, knowing his face would repulse people, Julius stated it wouldn't be a problem, but also gifted him a handmade mask to assuage his worries. The mask was a tacky affair, but Vangeance was still touched by the gesture, and was grateful to be shown such kindness and acknowledgement for the first time in his life. (Tacky as it was, he would end up wearing that mask for years to come, reinforcing it with magic to ensure it would last through any battle.) Of course, when he was 15, old enough to be given a grimoire, Vangeance promptly joined the magic knights, serving in the Gray Deers squad led by Julius. Vangeance devoted everything he had to Julius, and thus the magic knights, serving as a quiet but steadfast asset to the squad. Complications arose when he was 16, when the soul that had been asleep within him finally awakened and revealed itself. The soul was that of Patry, one of the many elves who had been massacred by humans, and centuries of dormancy had done nothing to lessen the rage and hatred he felt towards humans. Vangeance, though gentle by nature, knew humanity's potential for cruelty very well, and aided by the fact that the two of them were so closely linked in body and mind, felt a deep empathy towards Patry's sentiments. He had loved and sheltered Patry all this time, and Patry also considered Vangeance the only human he would acknowledge as a friend. So when he and Patry began periodically switching control of his body, and Patry started carrying out his duty-bound mission of taking revenge on humanity for the massacre of his people, Vangeance hesitated in intervening. Vangeance's own loyalties were to Julius and the magic knights, and he was devoted to protecting the Clover Kingdom's people; Julius had granted him a better life and a place to be, and Vangeance was honored to dedicate himself to the man he admired so deeply. But Patry was like a twin brother to him, a wounded person he'd spent his whole life protecting, whose anger and hatred were justified, and he couldn't bring himself to betray this closest friend of his. Years passed, and Vangeance led a double life. His dedication to Julius was true, and his career as a magic knight was illustrious. Julius had since been chosen to be the new Wizard King -- the leader of the Kingdom's Order of Magic Knights and, in many ways, the true leader of the Kingdom -- and had granted Vangeance the opportunity to form his own magic squad that he would lead as Captain. Vangeance formed the Golden Dawn squad, and populated it with talented individuals he sensed great magical potential in ... ... people who bore traces of the long-gone elves' magic, making them ideal candidates for the elves to be reincarnated in. Because while Vangeance did dedicate himself to protecting the Kingdom, he also couldn't deny Patry's one wish -- bringing back the elves who had been so brutally massacred. While Vangeance fought to bring peace to the Kingdom, when Patry was in control of their body, he worked towards orchestrating a violent revenge on the Kingdom's humans and using a select few as replacement bodies to resurrect elves in. The long charade has left its mark on Vangeance. He's widely celebrated as one of the most powerful mages of the Clover Kingdom, and the one most likely to succeed as Wizard King after Julius; the Golden Dawn is considered the most powerful magic squad, and Vangeance has done well in devoting himself to the Kingdom. But he's grown to hate himself for his weakness, for his inability to simply choose between his beloved mentor and his dearest friend. Even as this long and slow betrayal hurts a great many people, Vangeance remains too cowardly to make a choice, and he's accepted that he'll be paying the price for it very soon. Because in the near future, Patry's plan will reach its conclusion, and he will have to face off against Julius, almost certainly in combat. If Patry is victorious, then the Clover Kingdom will be punished for its crimes, the elves will be reincarnated, and Vangeance himself will vanish as Patry claims his body. And if Julius wins, then Patry (and Vangeance himself) will probably be killed to protect the Clover Kingdom. Vangeance is prepared to die. But he regrets that he'll be leaving so many debts unpaid, abandoning so many of his responsibilities. And as that day of reckoning draws near ... PERSONALITYBy all appearances, Vangeance is the perfect Magic Knight. Elegant, courteous and composed. Never without a calm smile. Soft-spoken and polite, but with a quiet authority and confidence. Gentle and thoughtful. Somewhat mysterious, of course, thanks to that mask and his reserved nature, but what does that matter when he's done so much for the Kingdom all these years? He's beloved by his brigade members for his strength and his considerate leadership, and beloved by the citizens for his tireless efforts. Vangeance is a much-lauded hero in the Clover Kingdom, and he lives up to that reputation in what seems to be an effortless fashion. And that surface assessment would be, for the most part, true. On a basic level, Vangeance is just a genuinely nice person. He's always had a kind and protective nature, one strong enough to be unchanged by a childhood full of abuse and belittlement, and he's earnest about his duty to help people. Diligent, attentive, and deeply sympathetic, he always tries his best to ease the suffering of others. Though some might find his nigh-impenetrable aura of calm to be a little unusual, it's not meant to obfuscate anything. It's likely equal parts a product of his harsh upbringing and an attempt to stay true to the ideals of a Magic Knight -- after all, the citizens will be more at ease knowing someone calm and steady is always at the ready, prepared to fight for them. And he does have plenty of emotions other than "unflappable calm and polite composure," it's just that they only periodically float to the surface. He can be spurred onto incredibly fierce bouts of competitive rivalry at times, though not necessarily about himself -- he has great faith in the brigade he's trained up to serve the Kingdom, and can get (quietly) very riled up if it feels like someone is belittling its members. His amicable personality veils a great deal of confidence and pride; after all, one doesn't claw up to the rank of Magic Knight Captain without being sure of their own abilities. Despite his genial nature, he's ultimately a fighter, and can be incredibly ruthless on the battlefield; he favors capturing over killing, but won't hold back in overwhelming an enemy with sheer force. And he's not above some crafty lies and manipulation when he deems it absolutely necessary for a good cause. 'Good but not soft' are the keywords here, probably. (Also he has zero qualms about wiping the floor with his colleagues when it comes to high-stakes cardgames.) On the other hand, when it comes to matters other than 'the duty of a Magic Knight,' he can be a lot more ... liable. He can get a little flustered when things go terribly awry (usually thanks to his larger-than-life colleagues), he's terrible at dealing with children despite liking them (he's a huge pushover), and it's suggested that he's exceedingly shy about romantic matters. As in, he has a bit of difficulty even speaking about a matchmaking party when the subject is sprung on him. Though he's by and large made an identity for himself as 'William Vangeance, captain of the Golden Dawn brigade,' he's only human beneath that grand facade, with his own quiet quirks and flaws. 'William Vangeance, the individual person,' you could say. 'William Vangeance, prospective traitor to his own Kingdom and race' you could say. The truth of the matter is that Vangeance is a man torn between two very deep loyalties, and has accepted that he'll soon die for his sins, for his inability to choose one over the other. At age fifteen he swore his life and soul to Julius Novachrono, the man who leads the Order of Magic Knights, who cherishes and protects the Kingdom, who was the first person to show Vangeance any kindness. Vangeance truly loves and respects Julius, and knowing that Julius wants to better the Kingdom and fix its flaws, Vangeance wants nothing more than to aid his mentor. All his work building up the Golden Dawn as the strongest Magic Knight brigade has been to express his gratitude to his beloved mentor, and Vangeance will gladly toil and fight for the Kingdom that Julius cherishes, that is full of people he cares for. But Vangeance has also spent a lifetime protecting someone else -- the soul of the long-dead elf Patry, present in him almost since birth. Though this soul was only full of silent hurt and grief and anger at first, it provided Vangeance with something very important: a reason to live. Vangeance survived an achingly lonely childhood solely off the knowledge that his body was not only his own, that he needed to protect this other person, and until he met Julius, Patry was the singular light of his life, his 'twin brother' and closest friend. That alone would have been enough to give him pause when Patry awoke from his long sleep and revealed that he hated, hated humanity, and wished to eradicate the Kingdom. How could Vangeance betray the one person he'd protected for so long, who was the sole reason he'd even survived long enough to meet Julius? But worse was the fact that Patry loathed humanity for slaughtering him and his entire race purely out of greed -- a massacre that Vangeance has experienced in his dreams over and over, for years and years. How could he possibly say that Patry's hatred towards humanity was wrong? His innately sympathetic nature combined with their shared body and dreams meant Vangeance fully understood Patry's pain ... and accepted it. Vangeance cares for individual people, but is disillusioned about humanity as a whole. Fifteen years of reliving that horrendous slaughter in dreams has only been bolstered by his personal experiences. Discriminated against by peasants, abused by his own noble family, and having witnessed the ugly side of royalty during his years of service, Vangeance has seen the worst of humans of every class. So as much as he cherishes people, and cares for his knights, and loves Julius, some part of him can't help thinking ... maybe humanity does deserve punishment. Maybe it's not his place to stop Patry from destroying the Kingdom's humans to pay the blood price of resurrecting his own innocent loved ones. In the end, he's decided to let Julius and Patry make the decision for him. They will fight, and one will almost certainly die. The winner will be the one who'll be considered righteous. And no matter who wins, his own life is forfeit. This much, he's already accepted. And he doesn't feel much grief for himself. For years, Vangeance has been torn between these two people that he loves dearly, whose ideals are in stark opposition. Unable to cut ties with either of them, he's assisted them both in equal measures, causing increasing harm to his allies through his actions, and this long, slow betrayal has left its mark on him. He's grown to loathe himself for his weakness, for his cowardice, for his inability to believe in the very people he swore to protect, and he considers himself something truly despicable. A man who doesn't deserve to have hopes for the future, who will soon vanish and only leave a swath of hurt in his wake. It's not that he wants to die. He wants to live, to continue to dedicate himself to others, to protect people and see them be happy. But the time has come for him to pay the price for his failure. His last wish would be to try and lessen the damage he'll be leaving behind after his passing, to ease the hurt of his betrayal and ensure others won't ever have to suffer a similar struggle. Vangeance has built a life defined by devotion, and those same devotions are what will ultimately end him. He's fine with dying for those he loves. He just wishes it didn't have to be in this way. ABILITIESthere are no words for how much i hate writing out stupid shounen manga abilities, do you know how fucking embarrassing it is trying to seriously list out all these mortifying chuuni powers REGARDING HIS FACEShockingly, he does have a face (and hair) under that hideous mask! He looks like this: ![]() The entirety of his face and ears above the bridge of his nose is heavily scarred. It's fairly severe, and can't be fixed even with magic. The scar also extends into parts of his hairline; perhaps as a result, his hair has always been white. He's consistently drawn with, like ... weirdly super lush eyelashes??? Also no eyebrows 'cause of all the scarring. The scarring is stated to be a result of a curse placed on his mother's clan, so characters who are highly sensitive to curses might sense some weird energy coming from him, maybe. Vangeance suffered through a lot of abuse and discrimination in his youth thanks to this curse scar, so he's (understandably) a little sensitive about showing his face to people, even for allies he's known for a very long time. It's not like he'll freak out if his face is revealed or anything, but he probably won't be doing it of his own volition, and he'll be a little avoidant for a while if it happens accidentally. ![]() No but seriously please look at these big ol' anime eyes because I feel like I'm gonna lose my shit if I think about them too hard.
